Geithner:IMF should play leading role

US Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner has urged the International Monetary Fund to play a leading role in overcoming the debt crisis in Europe.

Geithner issued a statement on Saturday, to coincide with the meeting of the international monetary and financial committee in Washington.

In the statement, Geithner said that the resources and functions to tackle the crisis have already been given to the IMF and it should play a leading role in strengthening the international financial system.

Euro zone countries have been facing difficulties in dealing with the Greek financial crisis.

Geithner apparently urged the IMF to do more to contain the crisis by putting together a bailout plan.

The US Treasury Secretary also wants the IMF to report more candidly on its evaluation of the foreign reserves and exchange policies of each country.
