Myanmar's pro-democracy leader says she will work with the new government that replaced the military junta in March, to push for the country's democratization.
In an interview with NHK, Aung San Suu Kyi said she felt that President Thein Sein, whom she met last month, is ready to implement the necessary changes for democratization.
She said the pro-democracy forces have a responsibility and obligation to help speed up the process, and she is cautiously optimistic about future talks with the president.
Asked whether she would participate in the government if requested to do so, Aung San Suu Kyi said she would have to consult her party, indicating that she may take part if the National League for Democracy supports the move.
She also said that changes are insufficient until they are supported by many people, and urged the government to take concrete action, including the release of political prisoners.
Aung San Suu Kyi's remarks indicate her intention to realize democracy by continuing dialogue with the government and persuading it to take concrete action.
