World leaders vow support for Libya's NTC at UN

World leaders have pledged to help Libya's National Transitional Council rebuild the country at a high-level UN conference.

Top leaders and ministers from more than 60 countries attended the meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday. The participants included US President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.

NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil appealed for international assistance, saying Libya has gained freedom, but faces many challenges after the long rule of Muammar al-Qadhafi.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the UN will cooperate with the NTC in maintaining peace and security in Libya and rebuilding its administration.

The French president said his country will support the NTC in creating an interim government, revising the constitution and choosing a new leader through elections.

Libya's new red, black and green flag has replaced the green one at the UN headquarters following the transfer of Libya's representation to the NTC.
