Myanmar President Thein Sein has announced that his government will suspend the construction of a dam in the country's north, saying that it is against the will of the people as well as lawmakers.
A presidential statement released at a Lower House session on Friday says the Myitsone dam project in the upper waters of the Irrawaddy River will be halted. The project has been promoted jointly with a Chinese company.
The project has caused conflict between the government and armed groups of local ethnic minorities. Opponents say most of the electricity from the hydroelectric dam will be sent to neighboring China and that more than 10,000 local residents have been evicted in unfavorable conditions.
Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has also expressed opposition to the project, saying it threatens the region's natural environment.
