Russian president Dmitry Medvedev says he decided not to run for a second term because Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is more popular than he is.
Medvedev explained his views in an interview on Russian TV aired on Friday.
When explaining why he decided not to seek re-election, Medvedev said that Putin is the most authoritative politician in Russia now and has a higher approval rating.
He added that the plan for Putin to re-assume the presidency, and for himself to remain on as prime minister, has been under consideration for some time.
Medvedev stressed that it was his initiative to withdraw from the election to avoid any split in the ruling party.
