Libya appeals for international support at UN

A senior official of Libya's National Transitional Council has appealed for international support for rebuilding the country at the UN General Assembly.

Mahmoud Jibril, the council's second-highest-ranking official, addressed the annual UN meeting as the Libyan representative in New York on Saturday.

Jibril said Libya is not yet completely free due to continued resistance by supporters of Muammar al-Qadhafi.

He stressed that the country urgently needs to restore security and have internal groups reconcile with one another.

Jibril called for political, financial, and other assistance from the international community. He also urged the UN Security Council to lift the sanctions, including an asset freeze, imposed on the Qadhafi administration.

The United Nations recognized the NTC as Libya's official representative earlier this month. Libya's new red, black, and green flag replaced the former green flag at UN headquarters after the transfer of representation.
