Obama working to block Palestinian UN bid

US President Barack Obama is accelerating diplomatic efforts to block a Palestinian bid for full membership in the United Nations.

The UN Security Council is to hold unofficial talks on the issue on Monday following Friday's application by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The United States has vowed to exercise its veto if more than 9 of the 15 council members support the Palestinians. But such an action is certain to draw opposition from other countries, including those in the Middle East.

The Obama administration is trying to dissuade members of the UN Security Council from supporting the bid to avoid use of the veto.

The Middle East peace process is one of Obama's diplomatic priorities. But negotiations are deadlocked with no concessions made by the Palestinians or Israelis.

Disappointment with the Obama administration over the issue is growing in the United States, putting the president in a difficult situation ahead of next year's presidential race.
