Actor appointed as Goodwill Ambassador to Cambodia

A Japanese actor has been appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador to Cambodia.

Japan's foreign ministry chose Osamu Mukai, who recently starred in a movie in which a group of college students build a school in Cambodia.

Mukai is known for his roles in an NHK epic drama and a morning drama series.

He once stayed with a family in Cambodia as part of a TV program.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 1991 Paris peace agreement for Cambodia. Japan has been supporting the rebuilding effort after a long civil war.

The foreign ministry hopes that Mukai will help strengthen the relationship further with fast-growing Cambodia.
