The United Nations will review Palestine's bid for full membership over the next 2 weeks.
A UN Security Council standing committee met behind closed doors on Friday to discuss the Palestinian application, which was filed last week. The panel is responsible for admitting new members to the world body.
Informed sources said committee members expressed the positions of their respective countries. The US representative reportedly said the bid would disrupt the resumption of peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel.
Nawaf Salam, the UN Ambassador from Lebanon who holds the Security Council's rotating presidency, told reporters that the committee will hold working-level talks over the next 2 weeks to review the application.
He said experts would review the bid's technical details, and the committee would compile a report after deciding whether Palestine meets the criteria for statehood. These criteria include being a peace-loving nation that can fulfill obligations set by the UN Charter.
But tough going is expected because of sharp divisions among council members. Some countries, including Russia and China, support Palestinian membership, while the United States strongly opposes the bid in support of Israel.
